PHILADELPHIA AGENCY LISTED TOP 25 IN NATIONAL LIST OF NONPROFITS

APM first-time member of Hispanic Business Magazine’s annual Top 25 Hispanic Nonprofits  The May 2008 issue of Hispanic Business Magazine, a national monthly magazine that touts itself as the authority on the Hispanic market, listed Philadelphia-based Asociación Puertorriqueños en Marcha (APM) in its annual Top 25 Hispanic Nonprofits list, a first for the 38-year old agency. “APM has always been a leader for Philadelphia’s Latino community. We opened the City’s first mental health clinics for the disenfranchised Spanish speaking community 38 years ago, and today we are leading the way as the City’s only Latino agency shaping the future of “green” affordable housing and the only Latino child care provider bestowed with a Keystone 4-Star rating, ”beamed APM President and CEO Nilda Ruiz. “It’s a thrill to finally be acknowledged for what we have always been…a leader amongst all agencies in Philadelphia, and a leader amongst Latino agencies in the nation.”

APM was founded in 1970 by a group of Puerto Rican Vietnam veterans frustrated with the lack of mental health services available for Spanish-speaking veterans recovering from the war. The agency quickly grew to provide an array of social services for the City’s growing Latino community. Today, APM offers health services and human services and leads community and economic development initiatives in Eastern North Philadelphia, touching the lives of more than 40,000 Philadelphians each year. The agency is currently leading three major community development initiatives, including an economic mobility center, a LEED certified “green” affordable housing unit, and 25 new or rehabbed homes for first-time low to middle income homeowners. It is also in an active campaign to recruit foster and adoptive parents for dozens of Latino children. For more information on these or any other APM initiatives, please contact Yvette Nunez, 267-296-7346.
